Information changes moment to moment as the effects of Coronavirus-19 shift rules and lifestyles across not just the United States, but the entire world.
In the United States, at the time of this article, there were 6,522 Active cases of Covid-19, with 1,806 new cases today. This represents, according to statistic available, an increase of approximately 27 percent. There were a total of 117 deaths, with 23 of those new today. Again, that is an increase in deaths of about 25 percent.
There is no doubt that the curve of persons becoming ill is beginning to demonstrate the curve which has been discussed among epidemiologists and other health care professionals. The recent focus on control of the virus has focused on the need to “flatten the curve” meaning that the same number of individuals may eventually contract the illness, but if they could be spread out over a great period of time, the impact of the disease might not overwhelm health service and resources so badly.
In California, as of 6 PM Tuesday (3-17-2020) there are 472 active cases and 11 deaths.
Governor Gavin Newsom has set up a series of guidelines and, so far, has decided that Californians will try to follow those without the need of using National Guard to enforce the rules.
“All seniors in the state and those with chronic medical conditions are asked to self-isolate at home. We recognize the magnitude of the resulting need for meals, groceries, and medical supplies,” Newsom said, “and the anxiety induced by such social isolation.”
The governor stated 13 task forces were working on those needs and the logistics of securing help for those who will need it.
Included in Newsom’s statements was the closure of bars, pubs, clubs, and other non-essential businesses. Restaurants may not serve guests inside their establishments but may prepare food for delivery or pick up.
Fresno State University joined the ranks of all groups which have cancelled or postponed events. Graduation this year, will not take place.
At least eight counties in california have imposed “shelter in place” demands on those performing non-essential services.
“The directive coming out of the Bay Area,” Said Newsom…”is no gatherings, which just makes sense to me at this point. … So directing that no gatherings be considered, advanced in this state, that’s the new guideline we’re putting out this evening as well, and we think it’s very rational under these circumstances. Disruptive, I know, for some, but rational, we believe, in this moment.”
On Monday, Newsom signed an executive order halting evictions, slowing foreclosures, and protecting against utility shutoffs. So help is on the way. Maybe not enough, but it’s a start.
Stores and other suppliers such as Amazon, are hiring more workers to keep up with the demand for goods. Safeway is hiring 2,000 workers, mainly in the Bay Area, to keep up with heightened coronavirus demand.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has released more than 600 inmates and cut its daily arrests from 300 to 60 in an effort to prevent the spread of coronavirus through close contact in jails, the Los Angeles Times reported. Some of the released inmates had less than 30 days remaining to serve, and the department is lowering daily arrests by citing and releasing whenever possible. No inmates have tested positive for COVID-19 as of yet, although those with flu-like symptoms have been quarantined.
The only casinos still open in the state of California are those which are on sovereign Indian ground. Those are not under the jurisdiction of state of federal regulations.
Residents can leave their home for specified reasons to make sure they have the necessities of life such as getting food and medical supplies. They are also allowed to go outside to take care of pets, go on a walk, and just get outside, so long as they do not congregate in a group and maintain at least six feet of distance between themselves and other people.
